Resurrection Synopses Common Note:
The student of resurrection appearances should readily note differences in
information provided by each Gospel. These differences may become a matter of
concern to those who expect them to share identical details that offer clear
chronological progression. However, another way of looking at the differences is
to appreciate the way in which the writers selectively provide details through
the course of many days (John 20:30-31; Acts 1:3). In that regard, it appears
that none of the gospel writers intended to be exhaustive; but rather selective
in the observances they report.
Further, although ITW's Synopses are
built upon a posed Chronological Chart (by R.C. Foster), it is particularly
difficult (if not impossible) to identify a true sequence of events after the
resurrection. The general sequence of resurrection appearances in Foster's
chart seems to follow the chronology posed by Paul in 1 Corinthians15.
In
summary, the differences between the gospels at this point appear compounded in
light of the fact that the Synoptic gospels are very similar throughout the life
of Christ up to the point of His death, burial, and resurrection. However, it
should be remembered that the gospels are both selective of events and different
on some details prior to that point. From the resurrection to the ascension,
there appears to be some, but not nearly as much, common tradition.
